There’s a reason Don’s Club Tavern doesn’t have a phone: “Don used to say, ‘You can’t sell beer over the phone,’” explains a friendly bartender on a slow night. In keeping with the anti-modernization attitude, there is a pay phone in a booth.
Don’s has been around for over 60 years and nobody wants it to change. It is routinely named the city’s best dive bar for its simple qualities—a few pool tables, worn-out booths, threadbare carpet, and beer and cocktails without pretension.
