Devil’s Thumb Ranch
Trip Ideas
About a 15-minute drive from Winter Park Resort is Devil’s Thumb Ranch (3530 County Rd. 83, Tabernash, 800/933-4339, www.devilsthumbranch.com, $230–895), a resort designed exclusively for snowshoers and cross-country skiers. While it’s certainly doable to just visit for the day and have lunch in the Ranch House Restaurant, it’s oh-so-tempting to make it an entire weekend.
The ranch has 5,000 acres devoted to recreation year-round, but they are best known for their snowshoe and cross-country ski trails. There is a fee for half- or full-day use, and also equipment rental and lessons. In addition to the skis and snowshoes for rent, there are Chariot “sleds” (like the kind attached to bicycles) to pull the wee ones around.
There are 52 rooms at the lodge plus 16 cabins, which are ideal for family get-togethers. The Ranch was given a significant upgrade to all the facilities in 2007.
