Tucked into the town’s historic district is a large castle that was constructed as a private home for a French priest and his mother in 1895. Miramont Castle (9 Capitol Hill Ave., 719/685-1011, www.miramontcastle.org, call for seasonal hours, $6 adult, $5.50 senior, $2 child, free 5 and under) is an amalgam of architectural styles with 46 odd-shaped rooms.

The castle has had many uses over the years—sanitarium, apartments—and is now filled with furniture and curiosities of the Victorian era.
