Private restaurants are few and far between in residential Centro. After succeeding for more than a decade in the face of constant threat of fines from inspectors, the world-renowned La Guarida restaurant sadly ceased operation in December 2009.
The popular Paladar Doña Blanquita (Prado #158, e/ Colón y Refugio, tel. 07/867-4958, daily noon–midnight) offers a choice of dining in the elegant sala or on a balcony overlooking the Prado. The criollo menu delivers large portions for CUC5–10. The place overflows with whimsical Woolworth’s art such as cheap muñequitas (dolls), plastic flowers, animals, and cuckoo clocks.
