Before the Revolution, Cuba had several golf courses. After 1959, they were closed and fell into ruin. The only courses currently open are the nine-hole Havana Golf Club and an 18-hole championship course in Varadero. For years, Cuba has been talking about investing in its future as a golfing destination. Ten new golf course projects are on the books. In May 2010, Cuba announced it would finally approve financing the resorts through residential real estate sales to foreigners—a prerequisite for foreign investors.
