Ecotourism and Hiking

Cuba has the potential to be a hiking and ecotourism paradise. Both are relatively undeveloped. Notable exceptions are the trails in the Sierra del Rosario and Parque Nacional Península de Guanahacabibes, in Pinar del Río; and Parque Nacional Pico Turquino and Cuchillas de Toa, in Oriente.

Guides are compulsory. Cuba has very few naturalist guides. Pinares de Mayarí (in Holguín Province), El Saltón (in Santiago Province), and Moka Hotel (in Pinar del Río) are Cuba’s three so-called “eco-lodges,” although they are really lodges merely set in wilderness areas.

Cubanacán (tel. 07/208-9920, www.cubanacanviajes.cu) has hiking and nature trips, including a guided trek up Pico Turquino. Cubamar Viajes (Calle 3ra, e/ 12 y Malecón, Havana, tel. 07/833-2523, fax 07/833-3111, www.cubamarviajes.cu) and EcoTur, S.A. (Av. Independencia #116, esq. Santa Catalina, Cerro, Havana, tel. 07/641-0306, www.ecoturcuba.co.cu) offer eco-oriented tours—but include hunting and Jet Skiing!
