Cuba officially claims 13 national parks, 23 ecological reserves, 5 nature reserves, 11 fauna refuges, 9 flora reserves, and 17 other protected areas. In addition, UNESCO has declared six regions to be biosphere reserves: Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra del Rosario and Reserva de la Biosfera Península de Guanahacabibes in western Pinar del Río; Reserva de la Biosfera Ciénaga de Zapata in Matanzas; Reserva de la Biosfera Buenavista, in north-central Cuba; and Reserva de la Biosfera Cuchillas del Toa and Reserva de la Biosfera Baconao in eastern Cuba. The Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (Ministry of Sciences, Technology, and Environment, or CITMA, www.medioambiente.cu) has responsibility for the environment; its Agencía de Medio Ambiente (Environmental Agency, www.ama.cu) administers parks and reserves.
