You can camp at Hotel Capazauri (tel. 506/669-6280, fax 506/669-6038, hotelcapazuri [at] hotmail [dot] com, $5 pp camping; $24 s, $46 d with fan; $28 s, $50 d with a/c), two kilometers north Cañas, on the east side of Highway 1. It has showers and toilets. The live-in owners have 19 rooms in two modern blocks, plus 10 cabinas set amid lawns. Rooms vary in size, but all are clean and meagerly furnished, with fans and private baths, all with hot water. Six have air-conditioning. It has a swimming pool and hosts a Friday night dance popular with locals.
The best place in town is the modern Nuevo Hotel Cañas (Calle 2, Avenida 3, tel. 506/669-1294, fax 506/669-1319, $27 s, $43 d). It’s popular with Tico families, who flock to the swimming pool and whirlpool tub. It has 26 air-conditioned rooms with telephones, cable TV, and private baths with hot water. Roosters are kept nearby—wake up call! Rates include tax. Hotel Cañas also has the nicest restaurant in town, it's air-conditioned, serves dishes from $3–10, and features cowboy paraphernalia on the walls.
Other merely adequate options are the Hotel y Restaurante Corral (tel. 506/669-0622, $18 s, $35 d), at the junction of Avenida 3 and the Pan-American Highway; Cabinas Corobicà (tel. 506/669-0241, $10 pp); and Hotel Cañas (tel. 506/669-0039, fax 506/669-1319, $13 s, $19 d no TV; $17 s, $20 with TV; $18 s, $29 d with a/c and TV), which has a good restaurant.
At last visit, Hacienda La PacÃfica (tel. 506/669-6050, pacifica [at] racsa [dot] co [dot] cr, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $4–15), on the Pan-American Highway one kilometer north of town, was planning on reopening as a hotel. For now, it is a private country club, though its colonial-style restaurant is open to the public. The menu includes cream of tomato soup, pastas, tenderloin pepper steak, and jumbo shrimp skewer.
Restaurante Rincón Corobicà (tel. 506/669-6262, rincon [at] racsa [dot] co [dot] cr, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. daily), beside the Pan-American Highway, is a pleasant place to eat, with good seafood dishes and a porch over the river where you can watch rafters go by. It prepares an excellent sea bass in garlic ($6), which can be washed down with superb lemonade.
