Cañas and Vicinity
Bagaces
Trip Ideas
The small, nondescript town of Bagaces is on Highway 1, about 22 kilometers north of Cañas. Several adobe-brick houses date back several centuries. Otherwise, even the most diligent search will not turn up anything more interesting than a bust of ex-president General Tomás Guardia on a pedestal in the park honoring the city’s most illustrious child.
Bagaces is important only as a gateway to Palo Verde National Park (west) and Miravalles Volcano (east).
A regional office of Area de Conservación Arenal-Tempisque (ACT, tel. 506/671-1290, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri.), is opposite the junction for Palo Verde, next to the gas station on Highway 1.
Accommodations
There are a couple of budget options in town. For a little more sophistication, head north on the Pan-American Highway a short distance to Hotel Laguna (tel. 506/671-8250, $50 s, $60 d), a colorful Italian-run hotel with 20 modestly furnished rooms, some with king beds. It has a lake with water sports, plus a large swimming pool and an open-air bar and restaurant.
