The Far North
Quebrada Grande
Trip Ideas
The village of Quebrada Grande, eight kilometers east of Highway 1—the turnoff is at Potrerillos, 23 kilometers north of Liberia (there’s a Guardia Rural checkpoint at the junction)—sits on the lower saddle between Volcán Rincón de la Vieja to the southeast and Volcán Cacao to the northeast. It is surrounded by grasslands ranged by cattle.
Several haciendas welcome visitors for horseback trail rides, including Finca Nueva Zelandia, a 500-hectare finca that includes a 200-hectare dairy farm and 250 hectares of tropical dry and humid forest abounding with wildlife.
Accommodations
Curubanda Lodge (tel./fax 506/691-8177, www.curubanda.com, $55 high season), at Finca Nueva Zelandia, about 13 kilometers east of Quebrada Honda on the road to Upala, is on the southeast side of Volcán Cacao, in the saddle between Rincón de la Vieja.
The rustic but cozy lodge has a TV lounge and capacity for 15 people in simply appointed but perfectly adequate and pleasing accommodations.
Getting There
A bus runs from Liberia to Quebrada Grande at 3 p.m. daily. Group transfers from Daniel Oduber Airport cost $20 per person. The road turns to dirt about five kilometers east of Quebrada Grande.
