Costa Rica appears on the itineraries of several cruise ships. However, stops are usually no more than one day, so don’t expect more than a cursory glimpse of the country. Cruises from Florida usually stop off at various Caribbean islands and/or Cozumel before calling in at Puerto Limón. Cruises from San Diego or Los Angeles normally stop off in Puerto Caldera or Puntarenas.
Contact the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA, tel. 754/224-2200, www.cruising.org) for a list of companies that include Costa Rica on their itineraries.
Private yachters can berth at an ever-increasing number of marinas on the Pacific coast.
Natural History Cruise Tours are offered throughout Costa Rica by Lindblad Expeditions (tel. 212/765-7740 or 800/397-3348, www.expeditions.com); National Geographic Expeditions (tel. 888/966-8687, wwww.nationalgeographicexpeditions.com); and Windstar Cruises (tel. 206/281-3535 or 877/827-7245, www.windstarcruises.com).
