Trip Ideas
Catering to kids takes some forethought. Many active sports are suitable only for adults and teens, and younger children are generally less tolerant of the patient waiting in silence required to deliver the delayed gratification of viewing rare wildlife. Here I offer a suggested itinerary that combines educational and fun options for both adults and children.
Day 1
Arrive at Juan SantamarÃa International Airport; transfer to a hotel in or near San José.
Day 2
Today, visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, with time to hike to the waterfalls; then continue to Selva Verde for a nocturnal nature hike and overnight.
Day 3
This morning, take a boat excursion on the RÃo Sarapiquà before transferring to the Rainforest Aerial Tram for a ride through the forest canopy. Both opportunities offer a chance to see lots of wildlife.
Day 4
After overnighting in or around San José, transfer to the Orosi-Cachà Valley for a day of whitewater rafting on the RÃo Pejibaye. Return to the San José area.
Day 5
Today, take the children to Zoo Ave and the World of Snakes, where the kids can hold snakes. Continue to El Silencio de Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve for overnight at Villablanca Cloud Forest Hotel & Spa.
Day 6
This morning, take a guided hike in the cloud forest, then continue to the beach resort of Tamarindo.
Days 7–8
Enjoy two days and three nights of relaxing and activities such as horseback riding on the beach, a canopy zipline tour, and a nighttime visit to Playa Grande to see marine turtles laying eggs.
Day 9
Today, transfer to San José via the RÃo Tárcoles for an afternoon crocodile safari.
Day 10
Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
