Environment and Natural History
Araya M., Braulio. Guía de Campo de las Aves de Chile, 4th ed. Santiago: Editorial Universitaria, 1991. A Spanish-language field guide, with English and Linnean nomenclature as well, to birds throughout the country.
Bahre, Conrad. Destruction of the Natural Vegetation of North Central Chile. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1978. A workmanlike analysis of the human impact on the environment of the Norte Chico, including mining and agriculture, but its argument is weakened by inattention to socioeconomic factors such as lopsided land tenure.
Couve Montané, Enrique, and Claudio Vidal-Ojeda. Aves del Canal Beagle/Birds of the Beagle Channel. Punta Arenas: Fantástico Sur Birding, 2000. A bilingual field guide, with excellent photographs, of southernmost archipelagic Chile.
Rottmann, Jürgen. Bosques de Chile/Chile’s Woodlands. Santiago: Unisys, 1988. Written by one of Chile’s leading biologists and published with assistance from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), this bilingual book, embellished with appropriate photographs, provides an outstanding orientation to Chile’s forests and their fauna.
Wilcox, Ken. Chile’s Native Forests. Redway, CA: Ancient Forests International, 1996. Comprehensive survey of Chilean forests and forestry from an activist, conservation-oriented perspective.
