Since its 1940 founding by textile engineer Walter Hopperdietzel, Alfombras de Puyuhuapi has produced handmade woolen carpets, tinted with Swiss dyes, for both internal and export markets. Some sell for upwards of $1,000, but there are smaller, more affordable pieces as well. Most of the 20 employees are women weavers from Chiloé. The benchmark price is US$150 per square meter.

The factory is open for tours 8:30 a.m.–noon and 3–7 p.m. weekdays; admission costs US$2 for adults, US$1 for children. The sales office keeps identical hours but is also open 9:30 a.m.–noon Saturday.

For more information, contact Alfombras de Puyuhuapi (Ernesto Ludwig s/n, tel. 067/325131, www.puyuhuapi.com).
