Puerto Bertrand
Trip Ideas
Separated from Lago General Carrera by a short and narrow channel, Lago Bertrand is the source of the Río Baker, Chile’s largest river in terms of its flow. Beautifully sited on the lake’s southeastern shore, the village of Puerto Bertrand is a convenient base for exploring the area, though there are several handsome lodges in the vicinity. It is 11 kilometers south of Cruce El Maitén.
Getting There
In summer, the Red de Turismo Rural Río Baker (Costanera s/n, tel. 067/419900) operates an information kiosk at the campground entrance; fairly well-stocked with brochures, it has Spanish-only staff.
Buses between Coyhaique and Cochrane, and between Chile Chico and Cochrane, stop at Hostería Bertrand for about 15 minutes.
