Gay and Lesbian Travelers
While there may be no legal prohibition on homosexual behavior, in a country where machismo is the rule, it can be risky in public, and police harassment is possible. Things are definitely better, however, than during General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo’s authoritarian presidency (1924–1931), when government agents rounded up homosexuals and threw them into the sea with concrete weights on their feet. Playwright Andrés Pérez turned this period into La Huida, produced in Santiago several years ago.
