Tobacco use is more prevalent than in the United States but less so than in Europe. It is prohibited on public transportation, including airplanes, long-distance buses, the subway, and city buses (though in some neighborhoods the odd smoker may light up in the back). A new but confusing tobacco control law is due to take effect; meanwhile, some restaurants have nonsmoking areas, and Chileans are generally considerate and observant of these.
