By Sea
Cruise ships and private yachts call at Chilean ports, but scheduled passenger shipping is rare. The scenic crossing from the Argentine city of Bariloche to Chile’s Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt involves shuttling over several lakes on tourist ships whose ports are linked by buses. The Chilean fjords cruise with Cruceros Australis (Av. Bosque Norte 0440, 11th floor, Las Condes, Santiago, tel. 02/4423110, www.australis.com) does allow passengers to board in Punta Arenas and disembark in Ushuaia, on Argentine Tierra del Fuego, or vice versa. Unfortunately, shuttles from Ushuaia to the newly declared port of entry on Chile’s Isla Navarino seem to be perpetual hold.
