Now an exhibition hall, this extravagant structure dates from 1906, when Valparaíso businessman Gustavo Adolfo Wulff Mowle indulged himself by building atop a rocky headland at the mouth of the Marga Marga. In 1920, Wulff added its signature tower and a section of transparent floor to see the waves breaking on the rocks below.
After Wulff’s death in 1946, the castle passed through several different hands, including the city of Viña and the Chilean navy, before finally coming under control of the national Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos, which made it into a museum and then a Sala de Exposiciones.
Near the Marga Marga’s outlet, the Castillo Wulff (Av. Marina 37, tel. 0322/269728) is open 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 3–5:30 p.m. daily except Monday. Admission is free.
