Museo del Mar Lord Cochrane
Trip Ideas
Reached by Ascensor Cordillera from Calle Serrano, near its intersection with Plaza Sotomayor, the Museo del Mar (Merlet 195, tel. 0322/939485) is open daily except Monday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Admission is free.
In a colonial-style structure dating from 1842, this misleadingly named museum has little to do with Lord Cochrane (one of the most colorful figures of the South American wars of independence) but much to do with ships in bottles—the Club de Modelismo Naval de Valparaíso exhibits its best work here. There are also occasional special exhibitions and events, and the views from the terrace alone are worth the trip.
