A great little museum on Parque Hidalgo, the Soconusco Archaeological Museum (8a Av Nte. near 1a Calle Pte., 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun., US$3.25) outlines the archaeological history of Tapachula and its surrounding areas. Gorgeous artifacts—stelae, pottery, musical instruments, ball-court vestments—showcase Izapa’s former glory as well as the artistic influences of the Olmecs and Aztecs.

The exhibits are distributed over two floors with hands-on extras for kids like stelae rubbings, mix-and-match Olmec heads, and Aztec vocabulary games.
