Beach

Most of Chiapas’s beaches are long and wide, but the beach at Barra de Zacapulco is especially so—its grey-black sand stretching dozens of meters from the ocean breakers to a band of stocky palm trees, and disappearing into the distance in either direction. It’s all the more appealing for being virtually litter-free, thanks to its isolation and lack of development.

Most of the time it’s nearly people-free too, making it an idyllic destination for travelers looking for low-key beach time. Holidays are a notable exception, especially Semana Santa (the week before Easter) and the week following Christmas, when the beach at Barra de Zacapulco can be packed with vacationers and loose trash makes its ugly appearance.

The surf here is somewhat mellower than other beaches along this part of the Pacific, though care should still be taken when swimming and wading, and children probably should not enter the water alone.
