A number of sights are within easy reach of Comitán, making for a fun day-trip or a series of stop-offs on your way deeper into the Lakes Region. The most popular attraction, Cascada El Chiflón, boasts a series of impressive waterfalls—including its 120-meter main cascade—and even a zip line.
Two modest but interesting Maya ruins—Tenam Puente and Chinkultik—are just off the highway between Comitán and Lagunas de Montebello, as is the historic hotel-restaurant Parador-Museo Santa María, boasting beautiful grounds and a fine religious art museum.
For something a bit off the beaten path, a number of small towns outside Comitán have superb colonial era churches
