On a hilltop across town from Templo de San Cristóbal sits Templo de Guadalupe. Built in the 19th century, it is the final destination of thousands of peregrinos (literally, pilgrims) who walk or run dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of miles to honor Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgen de Guadalupe.
Most arrive on or around December 12, amid a colorful celebration of the saint that is held mostly on the road leading up to the church.
