Posada Kin (Abasolo near Calle 5 de Mayo, tel. 916/345-1714, posada_kin [at] hotmail [dot] com, US$20–23 s, US$23–26 d) is a charming place offering white tiled rooms with stenciling on the walls. Each has a private bathroom, fan, and decent bed. Those at the front of the building have tiny balconies, which let in a good breeze. It’s a simple but nice place to stay.
The no-frills Posada Canek (Av. 20 de Noviembre near Abasolo, tel. 916/345-0150, posada_canek [at] hotmail [dot] com, US$7.50 dorm, US$15 s, US$20 d) offers a decent dorm option with twin and queen beds (no bunks here!) set up in spacious rooms. All include sheets, towel, soap, and toilet paper. The only bummer here is that there is only one fan per room—arrive early to get the bed nearest to it. There are no lockers, but small safes at the reception desk are assigned to each guest to store their valuables. If this is full, try the dorm at Posada Shalom II (Corregidora at Calle Abasolo, tel. 916/345-2641, US$8 pp).
