Best of Palenque

Palenque Archaeological Zone: One of the most important Maya ruins for the many discoveries and breakthroughs made there, Palenque also happens to be among the most beautiful, with graceful structures and well-preserved carvings and hieroglyphics. Although not a very big site, it’s a favorite for many.

Museo Arqueológico de Palenque: Only a handful of Maya archaeological sites have museums, and most aren’t too inspiring. Not so with Palenque’s museum, home to a small but stunning collection of artifacts, from huge panels of stucco glyphs to intricate funerary urns, plus a fascinating full-size replica of Lord Pakal’s tomb.

Cascada de Misol-Há: As serene as it is impressive, Misol-Há waterfall leaps 30 meters (98 feet) from the top of a crescent-shaped cliff to a large pool below. It’s perfect for swimming or just admiring, with a path that leads behind the crashing water to a small cave.

Parque Nacional de Agua Azul: Pictures don’t do justice to this remarkable natural phenomenon — luminescent blue water tumbling over a series of powerful waterfalls and gathering in calm clear pools, perfect for swimming. This is a great day trip from Palenque, but plan on going on an off day — this place definitely draws a crowd.

Toniná Archaeological Zone: Beautiful temples, amazing stucco murals, imposing hillside perch, intriguing history, a fascinating museum, and convenient location between San Cristóbal and Palenque — the only thing missing from this gorgeous and overlooked archaeological site are the crowds (which is all the more reason to visit!).
