The best place to learn about Charlotte and its place in the New South is at the Levine Museum. The interactive history museum highlights the people and places that have shaped the South from 1865 to the present day.

The permanent installation Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers is the most comprehensive interpretation of post–Civil War Southern history in the nation. The award-winning exhibit includes more than 1,000 artifacts, images, oral histories, and video clips.

A series of rotating exhibits explore other facets of the South and have included Rural Voices and Visions and From Apartheid to Democracy. The museum also hosts several popular special events, including the annual culinary event Taste of the New South; walking tours; A Woman’s Place, which is held in conjunction with Women’s History Month; and a distinguished lecturer series.
