This theater group was named in honor of its first home, a historic courthouse in downtown Concord where performances were staged since the theater’s founding in 1976. The courthouse was scheduled to be demolished to make way for a parking lot when a group of citizens convinced city commissioners to spare the courthouse from a wrecking ball and allow it to be used as a community theater.

Performances were staged in the space until the roof caved in during a dress rehearsal in 1981. The Old Courthouse Theatre was without a home for several years, performing at local schools and other venues that had available space. The nonprofit theater group purchased its current space, a former First Baptist Church, in 1984.

Since its inception, Old Courthouse Theatre has won awards for best play, best actress, and best actor from the North Carolina Theatre Conference. Performances range from national hits like You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Nunsense to works written by local playwrights.
