The population of Charlotte has almost doubled since 1980 to 669,205 and is expected to top one million before 2030, making it one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions in the nation. In 2006, North Carolina leapfrogged over New Jersey to become the 10th most-populous state in the union.
More than 12.3 million Americans live within a 150-mile radius of Charlotte; a full 62 percent of the U.S. population is within a 650-mile radius.
According to the most recent Census estimates, the population of Charlotte is 58.3 percent Caucasian, 32.7 percent African American, 7.4 percent Hispanic, and 3.4 percent Asian. The number of Hispanic and Asian residents has increased dramatically in recent years as immigrants from Latin America, India, and Southeast Asia have migrated to the Queen City.
