Factor’s Walk

One level up from River Street, Factor’s Walk has nothing to do with math, though a lot of money has been counted here. In arcane usage, a “factor” was a broker, i.e., a middleman for the sale of cotton, Savannah’s chief export during most of the 1800s.

Factors mostly worked in Factor’s Row, the traditional phrase for the actual buildings on River Street, most all of which were used in various import/export activities before their current transformation into a mélange of shops, hotels, restaurants, and taverns.

Factor’s Walk is divided into Lower Factor’s Walk, comprising the alleys and back entrances behind Factor’s Row, and Upper Factor’s Walk, the system of crosswalks at the upper levels of Factor’s Row that lead you directly to Bay Street.
