One of the few Savannah squares to show consistency in nomenclature, Telfair Square was indeed named for Mary Telfair, last heir of a family that was one of the most important in Savannah history. A noted patron of the arts, Mary bequeathed the family mansion to the Georgia Historical Society upon her death in 1875 to serve as a museum.
Originally called St. James Square after a similar square in London, Telfair is the last of Oglethorpe’s original four squares.
