Focusing on upscale art and home goods, this small shopping area runs for three blocks on Whitaker Street downtown beginning at Charlton Lane and ending at the Mercer-Williams House.
Antiques
Arcanum Antiques and Interiors (422 Whitaker St., 912/236-6000, Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m.) deals in a tasteful range of vintage items with a chic twist.
For a more European take, try The Corner Door (417 Whitaker St., 912/238-5869, Tues.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m.).
Perhaps the most eclectic antique shop in the Downtown Design District is Peridot Antiques and Interiors (400 Whitaker St., 912/596-1117).
Clothes
Custard Boutique (414 Whitaker St., 912/232-4733) has a cute, fairly cutting-edge selection of women’s clothes.
Mint Boutique (413 Whitaker St., 912/341-8961, Mon.–Fri. 10 a.m.–6 p.m.) right next door brings a similarly modern style to this often very conservative town.
Home Goods
An eclectic, European-style home goods store popular with locals and tourists alike is One Fish Two Fish (401 Whitaker St., 912/484-4600, Mon.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun. noon–5 p.m.). Owner Jennifer Beaufait Grayson, a St. Simons Island native, came to town a decade ago to set up shop in this delightfully restored old dairy building on the corner of Whitaker and Jones and has been getting rave reviews since.
Madame Chrysanthemum (101 W. Taylor St., 912/238-3355) is technically a florist, and a fine one at that, but they also deal with fun home items and gift ideas.
