City Market

A borderline tourist trap, City Market strongly tends towards more touristy, less unique items. Here are a few exceptions:

An absolutely one-of-a-kind shopping experience can be had in City Market at Universe Trading Company (27 Montgomery St., 912/233-1585, Tues.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m.) on the southwest corner of Franklin Square. This mind-blowing collection of kitsch—including, at last check, an actual cigar store Indian—is the real thing: a great old-fashioned junk shop, in the best sense of the term.

The whimsical A. T. Hun Gallery (302 W. St. Julian St., 912/233-2060, www.athun.com, Mon.–Thurs. 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 10 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.–5 p.m.) is one of the first true art galleries in town and features a variety of adventurous art from local and regional favorites.

Another City Market favorite is Chroma Gallery (31 Barnard St., 912/232-2787, www.chromaartgallery.com, daily 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.), run by two of Savannah’s most beloved artists, Lori Keith Robinson and Jan Clayton Pagratis.

Check out some whimsical watches at Time After Time (305 W. Bryan St., 912/233-0568, daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m.).

If you’re dying for a good smoke, try Savannah Cigars (308 W. Congress St., 912/233-2643, Mon.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Sun. noon–6 p.m.).
