Parque Nacional Arrecife Alacranes
Trip Ideas
Declared a marine park in June 1994, Parque Nacional Arrecife Alacranes is made up of five islands located 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of Progreso in the Gulf of Mexico.
Covering nearly 300 square kilometers (186 square miles)—the islands themselves make up only a fraction of that figure—the reserve is a haven for a variety of marine birds, turtles, lobster, conch, shark, and other species that are at risk of extinction.
There were no organized tours to the reserve at the time of our research—little tourist interest in combination with the high cost of gas make the trip from Progreso too expensive to be profitable for tour operators.
