Groceries
Trip Ideas
Facing Parque Santiago, Super Aki (Calle 72 at Calle 59, 6:30 a.m.–9 p.m. daily) is a full grocery store offering canned goods, produce, fresh meats, and dairy products, and more.
Just south of Parque Santa Ana, ISSTE (Calle 60 between Calles 47 and 49, 8 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 9 a.m.–7 p.m. Sun.) is a state-run supermarket with a warehouselike atmosphere.
The Mercado Municipal (Calle 67 between Calles 56 and 58, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily) is a rambling, two-story market offering every fruit, vegetable, and meat sold in the region. Upstairs, there also are about a dozen cheap eateries—not the cleanest but the bustling shoppers and yelling vendors are definitely an experience; comidas corridas (two-course meals with a drink) cost between US$1.50–3 but you can also order tacos, tamales, ceviche, and tortas for around US$1 each.
For fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats without the hustle and bustle of the larger Mercado Municipal, head to the Mercado Santos Degollado (Calle 57 between Calles 70 and 72, 6 a.m.– 2 p.m. daily). On Parque Santiago, this market gives you a taste of how the locals shop with its myriad of fruit and vegetable stands, tortillerías, shoe repair shops, and flower sellers. Stay for a meal—the handful of small restaurants are known citywide for their excellent seafood tacos and tortas. Prices run US$1–3 for a full meal.
