Domingo en Mérida

Sunday is a wonderful day in Mérida. Everyone puts on their Sunday best and comes to the city center, where the streets are closed to traffic. Artesanía vendors set up stalls, and pushcarts do a lively business selling tortas (sandwiches), elote (corn on the cob), drinks, and sweets.

Be sure to catch one of the many free performances throughout the day. The most popular is folkloric dancing presented in front of the Palacio Municipal, often featuring the city’s remarkably skilled youth dance troupe. A new addition to the Sunday lineup is the “Bici-Ruta,” a five-kilometer route, including a section of Paseo de Montejo, where cars are restricted to make room for bicycling; it’s popular with local families, but visitors can easily rent bikes and join in.
