Kiteboarding has exploded in popularity around the world, eclipsing windsurfing among adrenaline seekers, in much the same way snowboarding has leapfrogged skiing. Kite Cozumel (Caso Viento, tel. 987/103-6711, www.kitecozumel.com) is the kiting outfit of Cozumel native Raul de Lille, a former Olympic-level windsurfer and now one of Mexico’s top kiters and instructors.
He doesn’t come cheap: Private lessons are US$125/hour or US$500/day, and a three-day introductory course is US$900. For experienced kiters, de Lille offers clinics on kite control, tricks, and other specialties, plus adventuresome tours like downwinding the entire island.
Kite Cozumel operates out of the hotel Casa Viento (Country Club Estates, tel. 987/869-8220, www.casaviento.net), Cozumel’s only kiteboarding hotel and a short walk from the island’s best kiting beach.
