The vast majority of international visitors to Alberta head straight to the mountains, but instead of staying at a Best Western and eating at chain restaurants, these ideas encourage you to sleep, eat, and explore away from the crowds. Summer traffic along the Icefields Parkway is usually heavy, but as it is one of the world’s most scenic drives, you won’t want to miss this route. Most highway travelers stop quickly at the main lookout points and continue to their chain hotel in Jasper. But if you’re looking to avoid the masses, break the journey with an overnight stay at historically charming Simpson's Num-Ti-Jah Lodge.

Columbia Icefield

Take an Ice Explorer tour onto the glacier, but also take time to explore the wasteland left behind by the receding glacier and hike to Wilcox Pass for a sweeping view of the glacier-filled valley.

Maligne Lake

The Maligne Lake boat tour takes you to a part of the lake that is otherwise inaccessible, or rent a canoe or kayak and explore the shoreline at a more leisurely pace.
