South of Mammoth Lakes, the June Mountain ski area (3819 Hwy. 158, 760/648-7733, www.junemountain.com, lifts 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m., adults $60, youth $54, teens $45, children/seniors $30) offers more than 2,500 feet of vertical rise on more than 500 skiable acres. This resort caters to beginners and intermediate skiers, and 80 percent of its trails are green or blue. Beginners can even take a lift up to the top of Rainbow Summit and enjoy a long run down the Silverado Trail.

However, a number of black and double-black diamond slopes make a trip to June Mountain fun for more advanced skiers and boarders as well. Thrill-seeking experts and adventurous intermediates head up to the top of June Mountain Summit then plummet down the bowl (hardcore double-blacks) or slide along the ridgeline (blue). Be sure to check your trail map before going up this way unless you’re very sure of your abilities.

For a cup of hot coffee or chocolate, stop at the June Meadows Chalet at the center of the ski area.

Getting There

A daily Mountain Express Shuttle (760/924-3184, adults $5.50, reservations recommended) runs from the Mammoth Lakes McDonald’s to the June Lake ski area, arriving at 9 a.m. The return shuttle leaves June Lake at 3:30 p.m.
