At Valley of the Moon (777 Madrone Rd., Glen Ellen, 707/939-4510, www.valleyofthemoonwinery.com, daily 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., $2), 150 years of history juxtaposes with the highest winemaking technology California has to offer. Since the Civil War era, this Sonoma institution has passed through many hands and produced hundreds of wines.
The circa-1860s stone buildings house late-model stainless steel fermentation tanks as well as classic oak barrels. In the tasting room, you’ll find a small list of boutique wines, from an unusual Sangiovese rosé to a classic California Cabernet.
Valley of the Moon takes pride in its awards, and you’ll find that almost every wine you taste has its own list of medals. Check the website for a list of upcoming wine events that show off this great Sonoma landmark at its best.
