You might recognize the labels at the Schug Carneros Estate (602 Bonneau Rd., Sonoma, 800/966-9365, www.schugwinery.com, daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., $5–10). One of the Carneros region’s elder statesmen, Walter Schug has made wine that’s set the tone for California vintages for many years.

The estate itself is worth a visit; the Tudor-esque barn sits in the middle of barns and mustard fields (the brilliant yellow flowering plants) on the valley floor, with views of the surrounding mountains all around.

Schug’s hallmarks are Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, grapes that grow well in this cooler region, so be sure to try the latest releases of both.
