A favorite with the local-sustainable-organic food crowd, the girl and the fig (110 West Spain St., Sonoma, 707/938-3634, www.thegirlandthefig.com, daily 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m., $20) sits right on Sonoma Plaza. The menu changes often to take advantage of the finest local seasonal ingredients, or for a special treat, order one of the amazing cheese plates. If you love the sauces and jams here, look for the girl and the fig products both on-site and at wineries and high-end food shops throughout Wine Country.

Another California cuisine hot spot with a beautiful outdoor patio and a seasonal local-focused menu is the Harvest Moon Café (487 First St. West, Sonoma, 707/933-8160, www.harvestmooncafesonoma.com, Sun.–Thurs. 5:30–9 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 5:30–9:30 p.m., $17–25). The menu of this charmingly casual restaurant changes daily to take advantage of the best ingredients available.

If you just need a cup of coffee and maybe a quick pastry, stop in at the Barking Dog Coffee Roasters (201 W. Napa St., Sonoma, 707/996-7446, www.barkingdogcoffee.com, Mon.–Fri. 6 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 7 a.m.–8 p.m.). Barking Dog is the spot where the locals go to get their morning mochas. Sip a latte or indulge in a scoop of Caffe Classico gelato, take a seat on a comfy old couch, and maybe even enjoy some live music.
