Mike Duffy started making homemade wine with his dad when he was less than 10 years old. He got his degree in winemaking (enology) from the prestigious UC Davis program, and from there on it was only a matter of time before he opened his own winery.

Today, Optima Wine Cellars (498 “C” Moore Ln., Healdsburg, 707/431-8222, www.optimawinery.com, by appointment only) makes a small list of premium wines from single appellations within the Russian River Valley wine area. These include Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay.

They also produce a luscious Zinfandel port—perfect for dessert, or at the end of a long day of wine tasting.
