At the Chablis Inn (3360 Solano Ave., 800/443-3490, www.chablisinn.com, $175), the guest rooms include all the usual amenities: wet bar with mini fridge, in-room coffee maker, TVs with cable, and more. Rooms are simply decorated, but the beds are comfortable, the carpets are dark (perfect for drinking just a little bit of red wine in the rooms!), and the address is central to both the attractions of downtown Napa and the famous Highway 29 wine road.

The pretty, unassuming Wine Valley Lodge (200 S. Coombs St., 800/696-7911, www.winevalleylodge.com, $175) welcomes guests with its red brick and adobe tiled exterior. Inside, guests enjoy the serene rooms with unobtrusive art, pale yellow walls, and soothing pastel comforters. The rooms are nicely sized, and you can get your choice of king bed, two doubles, or a suite depending on the needs of your party. The Wine Valley Lodge also boasts a significant past; in the late 1950s and early ’60s, several movies were filmed in Napa. Various A-list stars, including Rock Hudson, Jean Simmons, and even Elvis himself stayed at the lodge during filming. If you’re a movie buff, ask for the Elvis suite!

The Napa River Inn (500 Main St., 877/251-8500, www.napariverinn.com, $225) has one of the best locations in Napa. It sits inside the historic Napa Mill, so you can practically fall out of your hotel room and hit the General Store (and restaurant), several galleries, the candy store, and at least one other restaurant on the way down. You’re also located steps from the center of Napa’s bustling downtown, and if you’re lucky your room might afford you a view of the Napa River.

Inside, this luxury hotel is crammed with high-end antiques and reproductions in the common area. Best of all, you can choose from three styles of interior decor: Historic Victorian rooms come with canopy beds, floral prints, cushy chairs, and slipper tubs; the Nautical rooms (many of which face the river) look like the inside of a yacht, with wood paneling, porthole-style mirrors, and rope-styled accents; the Wine Country rooms echo the natural wealth of the Napa Valley with floral linens, marble bathrooms, and oak moldings.

For a different style of historic lodging experience, stay at the Napa Inn (1137 Warren St., 800/435-1144, http://napainn.com, $175), which inhabits two Victorian houses, both painted blue, in the historic downtown Napa area. You can walk from either to downtown shops and restaurants, and take very short drives to the Wine Train depot.

As B&Bs go, the Napa Inn is a big one, with more than 10 rooms and suites. If you plan to travel with your pet, talk to the inn well in advance to get one of their two pet-friendly rooms. Elegant fabrics and lush modern textures moderate the florals and carved wood of the Victorian era. The nicest rooms have corner whirlpool tubs and king-sized beds. Breakfast at the Napa Inn is an event, with multiple courses served by candlelight. For the ultimate in pampering, book a spa treatment in the privacy of your room.
