The Arena Hotel (817 The Alameda, 408/294-6500, www.pacifichotels.com/arena, $100–150) sits conveniently near the HP Pavilion, making it perfect for hockey fans and concert-goers. It’s more motel than hotel, since guest rooms tend toward the small and the decor toward chain-motel floral ticky-tacky. You do get the standard TV, mini-fridge, coffee maker, and a surprise whirlpool tub.
Promoted as San Jose’s first luxury hotel when it opened in 1911, the Hotel Montgomery (211 S. First St., 408/282-8800, www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/montgomery, $145) still prides itself on its old-school elegance and hospitality. But never fear, they’ve kept up with the times, complete with weird modern art in the lobby and uncomfortable-looking squared-off couches in the bar. Guest rooms echo the elegance and add a touch of comfort, with Egyptian cotton linens and cushy comforters on the beds. Local original art and a standard-issue red leather chair round out the room decor. Posh amenities include an on-site gym, restaurant and bar, room service, and Wi-Fi in the public areas of the hotel.
