Civic Center and Hayes Valley
Trip Ideas

Some of the most interesting neighborhoods in the City cluster toward its center. The Civic Center functions as the heart of San Francisco; the beautiful building actually houses the mayor’s office and much of San Francisco’s government. Visitors who last visited San Francisco a decade or more ago will notice that the Civic Center has been cleaned up quite a lot in the last few years. It’s now safe to walk here—at least in the daytime.
As the Civic Center melts towards Hayes Valley, the high culture of San Francisco appears. Near the border you’ll find Davies Symphony Hall, home of the world-famous San Francisco Symphony, and the War Memorial Opera House. And servicing these, you’ll find fabulous Hayes Valley hotels and restaurants.
