Don’t be shocked, but the major ingredient in the cuisine of an area called Fisherman’s Wharf is…fish! It’s tough to walk down the streets of the Wharf without tripping over at least three big shiny seafood restaurants. You can pick just about any of the big ones and come up with a decent (if touristy) meal. A good way to choose is to stroll past the front doors and take a look at the menus.
It’s got the look of a big tourist trap, but at
McCormick and Kuleto’s (900 North Point St., 415/929-1730, www.mccormickandschmicks.com, Sun.–Thurs. 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m., $18–25), the chefs know how to cook seafood to satisfy even the pickiest local foodie. In the grand dining room with slightly scary light fixtures and the stellar views out to the Bay, you’ll find an array of fresh fish and a list of innovative preparations.
For fresh fish beginners, McCormick does offer some classic fries and grills as well. Be aware that this is a seafood restaurant, so land-based entrées are minimal here. Enjoy the fine wine list, and save room for in-season dessert.
