Classic Chez Maman (2223 Union St., 415/771-7771, www.chezmamansf.com, daily 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m., $9–18) has not succumbed to modern food fancification. A host of simple lunch and dinner dishes add a distinct California flair to the classic French bistro fare.
You can get a crepe or a quesadilla, a burger or a croque monsieur. Enjoy the tasty, inexpensive dishes in the soft pastel dining room that evokes the south of France. And if you’re looking for good food outside the Marina, Chez Maman has another location in Potrero Hill.
For the finest European cuisine, make a reservation at Quince (1701 Octavia St., 415/775-8500, www.quincerestaurant.com, Mon.–Wed. and Sun. 5:30–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat. 5:30–10:30 p.m., $27–39) in Pacific Heights. Chef/owner Michael Tusk blends French and Italian culinary aesthetics to create his own unique style of cuisine.<>
It’s best to arrive at Quince hungry; the menu is divided into four different courses, or you can try the six-course tasting menu. And once you’ve gotten a look at the dishes, almost all made with the finest local and sustainable ingredients, you’ll want to try at least one from every course!
