Take care getting to Theatre Rhinoceros (2926 16th St., 415/552-4140, www.therhino.org, $15–25), as it’s in a less-than-ritzy part of town. But it’s worth it. The Rhino puts on a wonderfully entertaining set of gay and lesbian plays, and has recently been branching out to explore the whole spectrum of human sexuality, especially as it’s expressed in anything-goes (even conservative Republicans!) San Francisco.
Focusing on short works by new writers, Three Wise Monkeys (415/776-7427, www.threewisemonkeys.org, $19–22) productions usually run at the Eureka Theater (215 Jackson St.). Each year TWM hosts the Bay One Acts (BOAs) as well as the Short Leaps Festival, where all plays read are 10 minutes or less.
Another favorite is the EXIT Theatre (156 Eddy St., 415/931-1094, www.sffringe.org), where you’ll see plenty of unusual experimental plays, many by local playwrights. The EXIT also participates in the annual San Francisco Fringe Festival.
