In addition to walks on the beach, the Torrey Pines State Reserve (North Torrey Pines Rd., 858/755-2063, www.torreypine.org, daily sunrise–sunset) offers some unusually beautiful wilderness trails. Be sure to look for Pinus torreyana—the rarest species of pine tree in the United States.
The shortest walk is the High Point Trail, only 100 yards up to views of the whole reserve, from the ocean to the lagoon to the forest and back.
For an easy, under one-hour walk, take the Guy Fleming Trail for a level two-thirds of a mile through forest, wildflower patches, and views of the ocean.
For a longer walk, leave the visitors center by the road, then take the North Fork Trail west to the Broken Hill Trail, which will bring you right down to the beach stairway and a great view of Flat Rock.
